Anime: Shakugan no Shana S

Shakugan no Shana S and it’s accompanying specials were a good break from all the more serious wordy animes I’ve been watching recently. Set after season 2, I have to first admit that Shakugan no Shana is my go to source for the magic girl genre.

Shakugan no Shana S was produced as an OVA, with only 4 episodes each about 20 mins long. The first dealt with Shana and Yuuji exchanging souls in a classic, guy in a girl’s body and girl in a guy’s body. The 2nd episode was Shana acting strange causing Yuuji and Wilhelmina to follow her around. Episode 3 and 4 was a short story of Shana doing her thing before the 1st season.

They were pretty good, and gets one in the mood for the next season that’s supposed to follow soon. It also develops the relationships between the characters (Shana and Yuuji, Yuuji and Wilhelmina as well as Shana and Wilhelmina) a bit more. It’s been awhile since the last season, so this was a pretty good in between. I especially enjoyed the 3rd and 4th episode. The story was amazingly sweet and tells us a bit more of Shana before she met Yuuji.

The specials were the usual Shana-tan ones, where Shana is in chibi form, and they linked to each OVA episode, but nothing special.

If you’ve been a fan of Shana, watch it. The animation is good, the music not bad. I fell in love with the ending theme. Overall a good way to spend slightly over an hour.

If you’re not a fan, there are things you probably won’t understand if you have never watched Shakugan no Shana show before, so I’d suggest start from the beginning.
