Anime: Kimi ni Todoke 2nd Season

Better to have loved than to have not loved at all right? In the case of the 2nd season of Kimi ni Todoke the latter might have been better. Kimi ni Todoke is a great anime series, the 1st season was sweet and to see the feelings of Sawako reach Kazehaya was amazing. The second season however seems just a tad bit draggy, the special relationship between the two main characters has all but disappeared. What they shared on that new year’s night all but gone. And it’s really sad because Sawako tried so hard and they were perfect together.

In the 2nd season we see new characters like Kento and old rivals like Kurumi. But the love (?) between Sawako and Kazehaya is so complicated. To base almost an entire season on a misunderstanding seems ridiculous. Feelings have never been so difficult to convey and no misunderstanding has ever been greater or has such an impact. Still as much as Sawako annoys me, she is a lovely girl that’s really just trying to come out of her shell (with the help of a GREAT MANY PEOPLE). Kazehaya on the other hand is ever girl’s dream guy. At the very least, the ending makes the journey worth it.

The animation is the same as the 1st season, chibi mixed with a lot of eye shots, sparkles and bubbles and a good deal of tears from Sawako. Sawako’s voice is as whispery as ever, the backgrounds are still SUPER pretty and the music sounds like they’re in heaven (literally). The cast of supporting characters really helps the story along, what with Yano-chin and her supreme knowledge, Chizuru and her nuggets of wisdom, Arai (their homeroom teacher) and his ego. Ryu had the best line of the show with “I might not be the right person to say this, but I don’t think you’re saying enough.”

Kurumi is still very much my favourite character with Kento and his unreadable feelings a close second. Rivals are great in love evidently. They make the story so much more engaging and they spur you on! Kimi ni Todoke’s strengths are in the supporting characters relationships, wish they would delve a little into them as well, rather than simply focusing on the two main characters. But I guess, to each their own, I’m sure there are some out there who see their love as reflected in Kazehaya and Sawako’s love.

All in all a good romance anime, and a nice continuation from the 1st season.
