Book: The Screwtape Letters

The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis was a book I bought awhile ago with plans to read. However it was only on the flight back from Sydney to Singapore that I finally managed to read it.

It’s an amazingly good read. I love C.S Lewis as an author and this book just makes me stand in awe of him. Letters from a senior devil to a junior devil is ingenious, I love how he uses Christian beliefs and twists them, giving us a picture of what devils might be doing. The idea is mind-blowing and the amount of issues and topics he is able to cover gives me as a Christian a good idea of what I should and should not do. It also gives readers a picture of God that is really all about Love and free will.

His ability to make theological issues into simple stories is something to be treasured and seen most apparent in his Narnia series. Screwtape letters on the other hand is very much for grown ups and does require a certain understanding of both life and Christian beliefs.

The ending of the book as well, just shows us what ‘devils’ are truly after. Of course, some things should be taken with a pinch of salt. Not everything from the devil’s perspective can be true, who knows for sure how the spiritual realm works?

Well-written, engaging (for both Christians and non-Christians alike) and a tongue-in-cheek look at how perhaps we are led away and astray from God.
