Anime: Seitokai Yakuindomo

Sometimes too much of a good things is bad, and in this case too many dirty jokes make for boring comedy.

Loosely translated into officers of the student council, Seitokai Yakuindomo is a show about the student council at Osai Academy, which was an all girls school until recently. I know the first thought that comes to mind is harem anime, but no it isn’t, sure there’s just one main male character and all the other characters are female but the most refreshing part is that they don’t fall head over heels in love with him. Instead he is introduced to the world of girl talk which just seems to be copious amounts of reference to sex.

Can I just say, that as a girl who came from a girls’ school, we didn’t talk about sex or allude to it all the time. And although it’s funny in the anime, too much of it became repetitive and predictable after awhile. Add to that the usual fanservice and little to no personality for the characters and you have Seitokai Yakuindomo. There’s a character for everybody, the tsundere, the bimbo with big boobs and the lolita. There’s nothing original and the entire anime just seems to play with puns on sex and sex-related stuff. It gets old pretty fast. Of course, nothing explicit is ever shown, just alluded to. It’s strictly PG I suppose, although I would never recommend this to anyone.

So yes, it’s worth a few laughs, but by about half way through the series you might start to wonder why you’re watching this. There are hints of a story developing, but really, not much is happening other than the usual depiction of school life. In conclusion, unless you really like dirty jokes, don’t watch it.

Oh yes, Seitokai Yakuindomo. The jokes certainly get old very quickly. I found myself doing other things during the course of the later episodes, not giving my full attention to the show. But what kept me coming back were the characters – some developments START to occur later in the show, though nothing ever comes to fruition. Frustrating.

Yea, I didn’t really pay much attention since, not much was going on in the show. I did however really enjoy the opening and ending songs. They were well chosen/written for the show and added a nice touch. You’re right about the ending, although I hope watching the OVAs will help with that.
