Day 02 – A book that you’ve read more than 3 times

There aren’t a lot of books I read more than once and there’s really only one book that I’ve read more than 3 times. And that is….

My father bought the book for me when it was going for cheap, sometime before the movie came out and ever since I lay my hands on it. I never put it down. I’m not sure why I read it again and again, I rarely do so for books. Perhaps because it was such an epic read and it was a copy I actually owned (rather than borrowed from the library). Also I’m a huge sucker for thick books, and this version was all three books in one, so imagine the size!

But yes, when the hobbit trailer came out at the end of last year, I was inspired to read the books again, but it was checked out of the library and I didn’t have my copy with me. Now that I’m back home, I probably will delve into middle earth once again. Sometime soon I hope. It’s a book I love, a book I hope my children will love and a book I will alway have on my bookshelf, an arm’s reach away.

On a related note, my favourite part of the book is not in the movie, which makes me immensely sad. It lies towards the end of the return of the king and the specific chapter is called ‘the scouring of the shire’. It’s my favourite because of two things. Firstly the main characters are Merry and Pippin and the two of them are by far my most beloved hobbits. Secondly because the chapter deals with the Shire and hobbits and it’s nice to see them in real action for a change. So yes, it would have been brilliant if it was in the movie, but I can understand why it wasn’t included. Oh well. I will just have to depend on my imagination.

For those who haven’t read lord of the rings, I know the book looks very daunting, but it really is a beautiful read once you get into it. I think it captivates all audiences no matter how young or old and the language and descriptions are just overflowing with detail and you can picture the scenes in your mind. For those who have read it, what’s your favourite part of the book? Do share!

I’ve read all Tolkien’s books, even ‘The Silmarillion’, but it’s ‘The Hobbit’ and ‘The Lord of the Rings’ i have opened up too many times to count. Long before these stories where made into films, I saw them vividly in my head. That’s what good writing can do for a reader. I love to write fantasy too.

The best re-read for me so far this year was not surprisingly, ‘The Hobbit’.

Tolkien has really created a whole new world that’s really rich in both history and culture. The hobbit was also a very memorable read and I’m looking forward to the movie!
